Guided bone regeneration is described as effective, predictable, less invasive, and widely used for implant placement. Guided bone regeneration uses barrier membranes to block non-osteogenic soft-tissue cells from the regenerative space. Barrier membranes used in guided bone regeneration may be resorbable or non-resorbable. Severe vertical or horizontal defects require a stable osteogenic space for new bone formation. Graft material with resorbable collagen membranes may not adequately resist external stresses in severe defects.
