Psoriatic patients have measurably elevated serum LPS levels and demonstrated gut hyperpermeability. Gut microbial DNA has been isolated from the blood of patients with active psoriasis. Leaky gut allows LPS to enter the bloodstream, activating dendritic cells and triggering the IL-6, TNF-alpha, and IL-1β cytokines that drive the Th17 pathway. Akkermansia muciniphila and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii help maintain the intestinal mucosal barrier; their depletion enables bacterial translocation. Circulating LPS elevates cyclic GMP levels in skin cells, dramatically accelerating keratinocyte proliferation — the hallmark cellular event in psoriasis.
