Hard-Shelled Produce

Any nut with a hard outer shell does not require organic certification because the shell prevents pesticide penetration. Avocados' extremely hard and thick shell acts as an impenetrable barrier to pesticides, meaning spending 50–80% more for organic provides no measurable benefit. Banana peels provide meaningful protection against pesticide penetration, making organic bananas an unnecessary premium. Cabbage is not heavily sprayed, and removing the outer one to two leaves is sufficient to ensure the interior is clean.
