Hiccups are involuntary contractions that most people experience during their lives. Hiccups are caused by involuntary diaphragm spasm that interrupts the vocal cords. The root event of a hiccup is diaphragm spasm, not something occurring in the throat. Every common hiccup trigger loads the blood with excess oxygen while depleting CO₂. Hiccups stop when CO₂ levels are raised. Hiccups result from spasms involving the phrenic nerve. Hiccups perpetuate themselves through a vicious circle of O₂ excess, CO₂ depletion, alkalosis, and continued diaphragm spasm. Repeated hiccups can become concerning because they cause physical discomfort.
