Historical Uncertainty

Historical events often appear cleaner and more inevitable in retrospect than they felt at the time. People living through the Great Depression did not know how it would end or what would follow. Crises feel unclear and frightening while people are living through them. People inside a crisis cannot know the full future shape of history.
