Tanzania's national HIV prevalence was 4.7% in 2021, corresponding to approximately 1.7 million people living with HIV/AIDS. Women face a disproportionate biological risk for HIV during heterosexual intercourse due to a larger mucosal surface area and greater exposure to infected bodily fluids. HIV/AIDS was the third leading cause of death in Tanzania in 2019 and caused an estimated 27,000 deaths in 2020. Transportation costs, opportunity costs, and concentration of women in low-wage or unpaid informal work are known barriers to HIV testing, especially for female-headed households.
