The OMSC group had 414 fewer readmission bed-days and less than half the readmission rate of the benchmark group. OMSC patients were compared with matched smokers who had not been seen by a tobacco dependence advisor. Reduced readmission rates were observed across OMSC smoking-status subgroups except among patients who opted out. Lower readmission among patients still smoking at six months may reflect future behavior change or unobserved quit periods before relapse.
