Understanding harmful behavior does not excuse it, but it reduces immediate personal reactivity. Empathy and social perception can free mental energy for creativity and relationships. Reducing people to fixed categories blocks empathy and increases self-absorption. Curiosity about others' hidden inner lives is presented as the basis of social intelligence. Human beings suffer psychological and physical costs when their social capacities are not deeply used.
