Urgent hyperkalaemia treatment is not well standardised due to limited trial data and guidelines. The prevalence of hyperkalaemia is increasing as chronic kidney disease and related comorbidities become more common. Hyperkalaemia can cause life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias. Hyperkalaemia is most often seen in patients with diabetes, heart failure, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, or those on renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors. Hyperkalaemia occurs in up to 3% of emergency department patients and is associated with higher inpatient admission and mortality.
