Keeping the ribcage controlled helps maintain proper trunk and ribcage position during the alternating press. The exercise is performed in an alternating rhythm where one arm presses as the other lowers. As one dumbbell is pressed back up, the opposite dumbbell is lowered. The movement alternates sides, with one dumbbell lowering while the other side remains ready to press. At the top of the press, the movement should reach as far as possible while the ribcage drops down instead of flaring upward. Breathing should emphasize exhaling during the pressing and reaching part of the movement. The exercise begins with both dumbbells positioned for pressing while lying on the incline bench. The incline alternating dumbbell press uses an incline bench and a pair of dumbbells.
