Inflammatory Cartilage Degradation

NF-kB is described as an upstream inflammatory switch that makes osteoarthritis more than mechanical wear. Inflammatory cytokines increase MMPs and aggrecanases that degrade collagen and proteoglycan structures. Joint stress, cartilage damage, and circulating inflammatory compounds can activate NF-kB. Older joints are more vulnerable because chondrocytes rebuild less effectively.
