Internet addiction lacks formal recognition in diagnostic systems for mental disorders despite being discussed as a public-health concern. The study identified a process in which exposure, reinforcement, and ineffective resistance shaped students' internet addiction experiences. The study interprets internet addiction as being sustained partly by unmet psychological needs that the internet can compensate for. The study examined internet addiction as lived and perceived by Taiwanese junior college students rather than only as a diagnostic category.
