Dexmedetomidine has sedative, anxiolytic, sympatholytic, and analgesic-sparing effects. Dexmedetomidine promotes sleep through α2 receptor activation in the locus coeruleus. Hypotension and bradycardia commonly limit perioperative IV dexmedetomidine, especially in elderly patients.
