Phytic acid is generally considered a dietary antinutrient because it reduces absorption of iron, zinc, and magnesium, but this same iron-binding property makes it therapeutic in iron overload contexts. Consuming fiber alongside iron-containing foods physically reduces iron absorption in the gut. Inositol hexaphosphate (IP6) is the recommended supplement form of phytic acid for therapeutically binding and reducing iron.
