A standardized composite of death, vegetative state, or severe disability also favored liberal transfusion. Liberal transfusion significantly reduced the risk of unfavourable neurological outcome in adults with acute acquired brain injury and anaemia. Liberal transfusion was linked to almost double the likelihood of receiving a transfusion. The evidence supports a liberal target of at least 90–100 g/L for patients with acute acquired brain injury and anaemia. Available trials cannot determine whether 90 g/L or 100 g/L is the better liberal threshold.
