Women’s longer average lifespan does not fully explain their higher Alzheimer’s burden. The idea that women have more Alzheimer’s because they live longer is presented as incomplete and partly incorrect. Age-of-onset patterns indicate that the sex difference in Alzheimer’s is not simply an aging effect. Assuming longevity explains the sex disparity can discourage investigation of sex-specific mechanisms, risk factors, and prevention strategies.
