Lower limb and upper limb access did not differ significantly in malposition rates in abdominal and thoracic disease groups. The study did not establish whether right or left lower limb veins are better for avoiding non-central malposition. Anatomical angles between the common iliac veins and IVC may make it difficult for flexible catheters to enter the IVC. Lower limb access still produced malpositions in 9 of 100 neonates with lower limb insertion. Lower limb venous access was not a risk factor for primary non-central PICC tip malposition in this cohort.
