India accounts for approximately half of the South-East Asia Region's malaria cases. India's malaria epidemiology is highly heterogeneous, with transmission patterns varying across urban, periurban, rural, forest-foothill, coastal, and cross-border ecological zones. Globally, malaria caused an estimated 263 million cases and 597,000 deaths in 2023. India officially exited the High Burden to High Impact initiative in 2024 following sustained case reductions. Between 2017 and 2023, estimated malaria cases in India fell by 69% and deaths fell by 68%, according to WHO estimates. Despite long-term progress, India's national programme surveillance data show a recent upward trend in reported malaria cases, reversing earlier gains.
