Megestrol acetate may reduce 5-HT3 expression and proinflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1 and tumour necrosis factor alpha. Mechanistic evidence suggests megestrol acetate may reduce emesis by affecting 5-HT3 receptor-mediated signalling.
