Melanocytes

Once the melanocyte stem cell supply is exhausted, no new melanocytes can be generated and hair loses its pigmentation permanently. Melanocytes are the pigment-producing cells responsible for giving hair its color. Age-related oxidative and gene-expression changes progressively impair melanocyte function.
