In IMpassion130, atezolizumab plus nab-paclitaxel improved median progression-free survival in untreated PD-L1-positive metastatic triple-negative breast cancer from 5.0 to 7.5 months. Patients with metastatic triple-negative breast cancer generally have poor prognosis, with median overall survival of about one year. Despite benefit from atezolizumab plus nab-paclitaxel, about 20% of treated patients in IMpassion130 progressed within three months. Angiogenesis was associated with reduced progression-free survival in this disease context. Immune checkpoint inhibitor plus chemotherapy combinations have become standard first-line treatment for PD-L1-positive metastatic triple-negative breast cancer.
