Bacteria can transfer genes to one another through plasmids and other mechanisms, unlike gene exchange in higher organisms. Antibiotic resistance is a key safety concern for genetically engineered microbes because if a modified organism acquires a resistance gene through horizontal transfer, it becomes much harder to control. Long-read sequencing is valuable for identifying which genes are actually present in a bacterial genome rather than guessing from short sequence fragments. Genetically engineered microbes could in principle be designed to carry multiple beneficial functions within a single organism.
