MBCT is an eight-week group psychological intervention combining mindfulness meditation training with cognitive-behavioural therapy elements for depression. Analyses of relapse-prevention trials found that MBCT effects increased with higher residual symptoms. MBCT was originally developed for relapse prevention in remitted patients rather than active depressive episodes. MBCT aims to help patients disengage from maladaptive habitual responses and respond more adaptively to negative mood and stress.
