The SOUND trial uses the MoCA-HI rather than the standard MoCA to prevent hearing loss from systematically biasing cognitive assessment. Participants must have adequate visual acuity better than 20/63 to read the visual instructions used by the MoCA-HI. The MoCA-HI assesses executive function, language, orientation, calculations, conceptual thinking, memory, visuoperception, attention, and concentration, with a maximum score of 30 points. The MoCA-HI is a validated adaptation of the standard MoCA that substitutes visual for verbal instructions to prevent hearing loss from confounding cognitive test performance.
