Mold Species

Macrocyclic trichothecenes are exclusive to Stachybotrys and are treated as definitive proof of structural mold when positive. Aspergillus is associated with aflatoxin and gliotoxin, with aflatoxin binding DNA and gliotoxin suppressing intracellular immunity. Fusarium and Gliocladium species are associated with zearalenone, which can act as a xenoestrogen. Stachybotrys can be difficult to identify because it often colonizes the back of drywall and may not be visible or odorous. Penicillium is described as a common indoor mold associated with ochratoxin.
