Prior studies suggest multilayer compression can reduce early postoperative ankle oedema and improve early knee ROM and straight-leg-raise ability after total knee arthroplasty. A previous RCT found MLB improved mobility and reduced swelling and pain at discharge, but lacked long-term follow-up. MLB is intended to provide sustained moderate gradient compression that supports lymphatic return while reducing adverse effects on skin and circulation. The proposed mechanism is that compression raises tissue hydrostatic pressure to counteract oedema from capillary leakage and support earlier strength training.
