Iodine supplementation has shown benefit for thyroid-related swelling in some cases when caught early. Myxedema resembles edema in appearance but does not respond to diuretics. Myxedema does not respond to diuretics or potassium supplementation the way fluid edema does. Myxedema involves accumulation of mucopolysaccharides in connective tissue; the swelling is not free fluid. Myxedema is caused by waste product accumulation in the tissues rather than fluid accumulation, making it mechanically distinct from true fluid edema. Both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can produce myxedema. Myxedema is associated with a spike in thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). Resolving myxedema-pattern swelling requires directly addressing hypothyroidism, not treating the swelling symptom.
