NEWS demonstrates the strongest accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity for predicting death and ICU admission in emergency triage among existing validated tools. At a 7% threshold probability for mortality, NEWS and PBR deliver identical net clinical benefit of 1%. NEWS incorporates six vital-sign parameters including blood pressure, consciousness, and oxygen saturation, compared to only two for PBR. A NEWS value of 7 or higher has performed strongly for predicting deterioration including ICU transfer or death across multiple care settings. In haematology, NEWS has mostly been evaluated retrospectively rather than through prospective controlled trials. NEWS was introduced by the Royal College of Physicians in 2012 to standardise early warning score use in the UK. Early warning scores use routine physiological measurements to identify patients who may need urgent medical assessment. NEWS has documented weaknesses in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and acute brain injury. NEWS uptake in the Chinese healthcare system is low partly because assembling all required parameter values quickly under field conditions is difficult.
