The absence of a direct mechanical explanation for female orgasm is the primary reason the evolutionary debate has persisted. For evolution to select for a trait, that trait must confer some reproductive advantage. The causal coupling of orgasm and ovulation in rabbits gave evolution a clear reason to preserve and refine the response.
