In the naturalistic movie analysis, BNR produced smoother spatial structure and more visual cortex activation than ISC. Predictor construction is difficult in naturalistic fMRI because stimulus features are complex and incompletely specified. Manual or computational feature extraction can miss relevant stimulus dimensions and create correlated predictors. Naturalistic fMRI uses continuous, ecologically valid stimuli such as stories or movies. The movie-viewing study is presented as the intended use case for BNR.
