Socioeconomic inequalities in neonatal care populations have not previously been systematically reviewed according to the article. Babies admitted to neonatal units because of extreme prematurity, severe illness, or major congenital anomalies are at high mortality risk and contribute substantially to neonatal mortality rates. Alternative mortality time frames and neonatal care populations may introduce selection bias. A secondary aim is to explore the association between maternal socioeconomic status and neonatal mortality among babies admitted to neonatal intensive care or neonatal units.
