The connection between nitrous oxide exposure at a dental visit and emerging neurological symptoms is rarely recognized. Nitrous oxide irreversibly inactivates B12 by oxidizing its cobalt center. In patients who are already borderline B12 deficient, a single dental procedure using nitrous oxide can trigger symptomatic deficiency.
