Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy

NSPT includes oral hygiene instruction and professional mechanical plaque removal, with scaling, polishing, prophylaxis and subgingival debridement when needed. Supportive periodontal care includes hygiene reinforcement, oral hygiene assessment, risk-factor assessment, periodontal charting when appropriate and professional plaque removal. Experimental-group participants receive their first NSPT session within 2 weeks after baseline assessment. The control group receives comprehensive NSPT after the 2-year study endpoint for ethical reasons. The trial evaluates whether active non-surgical periodontal therapy plus supportive periodontal care prevents tooth loss and improves masticatory function in patients with CKD and stage III periodontitis.
