Non-surgical site infections were far more frequent in the restricted group (8.97%) than in the unrestricted group (0.69%). The increase in non-surgical site infections suggests the effect of antibiotic restriction may extend beyond wound infection. Broad-spectrum antibiotics permitted in earlier QA waves may have incidentally reduced infections such as urinary tract infection or pneumonia in older or comorbid patients.
