Oxygen Diffusion

Alveolar enlargement in COPD directly impairs the lungs' ability to oxygenate blood. Oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange occurs in the alveoli. Greater oxygen availability in inhaled air allows more carbon dioxide to be exhaled. Carbon dioxide is a gaseous waste product of cellular metabolism.
