The present study modifies earlier Penna-model interpretations of Pacific-salmon-like catastrophic senescence by emphasizing mutation tolerance. Earlier Penna-model work concluded that Pacific salmon catastrophic senescence could be explained solely by semelparity. Starvation during upstream migration has been suggested as a proximate cause of Pacific salmon death after spawning. Pacific salmon are used as a canonical example of semelparous catastrophic senescence.
