Paranasal Sinus Pathway

Nitric oxide synthesized in the paranasal sinuses accumulates in the sinus cavity and is carried to the lungs during nasal breathing. The paranasal sinus pathway only functions when nasal breathing is the dominant breathing pattern. Mouth breathing bypasses the paranasal sinus pathway entirely.
