Indonesia's national stillbirth rate declined from 10.8 to 8.3 per 1,000 total births between 2013 and 2023, but remains substantially higher than in neighboring Southeast Asian countries. Indonesia ranks eighth globally among countries with the highest combined burden of maternal deaths, stillbirths, and newborn deaths. The study sample perinatal mortality rate was 22 per 1,000 pregnancies, lower than sub-Saharan Africa's rate, attributed to Indonesia's comparatively stronger urban healthcare infrastructure. Indonesia's neonatal mortality rate was 11 per 1,000 live births in 2021, equating to approximately 50,000 neonatal deaths per year. An estimated 2.3 million perinatal deaths occur globally each year, with 95% concentrated in low- and middle-income countries. The Every Newborn Action Plan sets a target of no more than 12 stillbirths and neonatal deaths per 1,000 births in every country by 2030.
