Strategic periodization allows deeper development of each quality during dedicated phases instead of trying to optimize all qualities simultaneously. The standard sawtooth cycle calls for 5–6 weeks of intense training followed by 2 weeks of reduced-intensity work before the next cycle begins. During an endurance-focused season, lifting volume can be reduced while intensity is not necessarily reduced. A dedicated strength phase can last several months while endurance is maintained at a lower commitment level. A sawtooth training pattern alternates between hard training blocks and recovery periods on a repeating cycle. Seasonal or cyclical periodization is presented as an effective way to manage interference between strength and endurance training.
