Periodontitis

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting tooth-supporting tissues. The protocol uses the 2017 World Workshop periodontitis classification to address limitations in prior systemic-disease research on periodontal therapy. Clinical research indicates that patients with CKD may have accelerated periodontal tissue destruction and alveolar bone resorption. Periodontitis causes periodontal pockets, clinical attachment loss, alveolar bone destruction and ultimately tooth loss. The article identifies periodontitis as the primary cause of tooth loss in adults.
