Passive optical models trade update flexibility for fast, low-overhead inference on stable tasks. Photonic AI is presented as embedding a learned model in the geometry of a passive optical medium. The optical stack remains linear in complex field amplitude until photodetection. The proposed system performs the high-dimensional transformation optically while leaving detection and decision logic to low-bandwidth electronics. Photonic AI addresses edge AI limits caused by electronic memory movement and clocked multiply-accumulate execution.
