Improved sensory feedback from massage or physical therapy may help the brain control the elbow more effectively. Physical therapies were labor-intensive relative to pharmaceutical alternatives. The physical therapy group receives 50-minute sessions five times per week for 12 weeks. It is uncertain whether physical therapy provides sufficiently precise proprioceptive input to fully resolve the problem or only a general, possibly incomplete increase in information. Early physical therapies were hands-on and required dedicated staff attendance. Massage and physical therapy can be useful for tennis elbow because they increase proprioceptive input. Each physical therapy session includes at least three modalities selected from cycling, resistance training, balance exercises, postural control training, and locomotion training. Physical therapy is being investigated as a complementary non-pharmacological strategy for SMA type III. SMA type III patients are considered suitable for exercise interventions because disease progression is slow and residual strength is preserved.
