Compared with general ICU scores, the POP-score is cardiac-surgery-specific and uses only five variables. The model output is an individual predicted probability of 30-day mortality. The POP-score uses a binary logistic regression equation to predict 30-day mortality probability for an individual patient. The POP-score was developed to update cardiac surgery mortality risk after the operation using perioperative information. The POP-score can usually be calculated within 72 hours after surgery because its required variables are available early.
