Population Ageing

Pudong crossed the aged-society threshold in 2008 and the hyper-aged-society threshold in 2018. Global life expectancy rose from 48 years in 1950 to over 72 years in 2019, driven by advances in medicine and technology. Pudong's ageing population is presented as a central driver of rising absolute stroke mortality. Other factors offset some ageing-driven mortality increases but do not prevent crude mortality from rising. The population aged 60 or older is projected to grow from 1 billion in 2020 to 2.1 billion by 2050, while the population aged 80 or older is expected to triple to 426 million. Population ageing is accompanied by rising rates of geriatric syndromes, which are complex, multifactorial conditions that reduce functionality and increase risk of serious health complications.
