Effectiveness of supervision is assessed using indicators including research productivity, timely degree completion, enhanced research skills, leadership quality, and sustained academic engagement. Contextual factors including geographic location within Africa, gender dynamics, and the presence of formalised programmes are considered to explain variation in supervision outcomes. Systemic barriers make it difficult to replicate or scale mentorship-based supervision best practices across Africa, and low-resource institutions are most severely affected. Review recommendations will include strategies to narrow gender disparities in research leadership and build cross-border collaborative networks.
