Postoperative sore throat and hoarseness outcomes conflict with enhanced recovery after surgery goals in thoracic surgery. Published POST rates with DLT are 35–45%, and the trial control group event rate is assumed to be 30%. DLT-associated sore throat, hoarseness, and oedema can delay oral intake, increase analgesic requirements, prolong recovery, and extend hospital stays. The primary endpoint is the composite incidence of sore throat and/or hoarseness at 24 hours postoperatively. The trial is powered to detect an absolute reduction of 15 percentage points in POST incidence with the VBB approach.
