Poultry Clinical Signs

Infected birds display swelling of the tissue surrounding the eyes. Clinical signs of H5N1 in poultry may appear in various combinations depending on disease severity and progression. Purple discoloration of the comb is a characteristic sign of H5N1 infection in poultry. Purple discoloration of the wattles is a characteristic sign of H5N1 infection in poultry. H5N1-infected birds may exhibit twisting or abnormal positioning of the head and neck. Complete paralysis can occur in advanced cases of H5N1 infection in poultry. The presence of clinical signs in a flock indicates active H5N1 infection and requires immediate farm intervention.
