Prior mood stabilizer use was the strongest predictor of making a suicide attempt at the index visit, likely reflecting greater underlying psychopathology and behavioural dysregulation. Having a specific suicide plan was a significant predictor of index attempt, replicating findings from prior literature. Anticonvulsant mood stabilizers carry an FDA warning for increased suicide risk, raising the possibility of a direct drug effect on the predictor relationship.
