Further high-quality population-based studies are needed to refine estimates, clarify risk profiles, quantify long-term sequelae, and support paediatric-specific strategies. High-risk settings include perioperative care, prolonged immobility, critical illness, malignancy, and long-term central venous access. The evidence supports targeted vigilance and prophylaxis in well-defined high-risk paediatric settings. Thrombotic risk assessment should be part of routine contraceptive prescribing for adolescents. Broad population screening for paediatric PTE is unlikely to be cost-effective because the condition is rare.
