Manufacturers must reproduce an oxygen-free, mucin-associated environment because Akkermansia lives attached to the gut mucin layer. Solving key cultivation requirements enabled scaled testing of Akkermansia as a probiotic or probiotic-like intervention. U.S. probiotic production faces a practical constraint because strains cannot be grown and sold if cultivated in meat-based media.
